Find a mentor - a key to the career during the crisis
The
representatives of the new generation (born after 1978) used to be ready to
change jobs just because of the lack of serious attitude to their company or
due to the fact that the authorities did not find time to take them something.
Now they have a strong incentive to stay in their places: rapidly decreasing
labor market. Employment experts point out that fewer young specialists ready
to quickly change jobs just because of the lack of attention to their persons.
Most young
professionals never planned to stay in their first job for more than two years.
Young
workers, who have realized that it is now finding a new job will be difficult
to adjust to the new reality and stay in one place for a long time. To gain a
foothold in their work, they should find a way of non-intrusive communication
with senior management and start to actively seek out mentors. Since the
opportunities now not so much, mentoring can be a strategic way to develop
their own career.
So how
energetic young professionals to learn how to communicate with managers who are
overworked and are constantly under stress, but still suffer from a shortage of
staff caused by the widespread decline? It is best to start by examining the
resources that already offers the employer. Most employees are surprised to
find that their company has a mentoring program, the existence of which they
did not even know existed.
Almost 70%
of the 500 companies in the Fortune offer mentoring programs. The HR department
or HR-department of your company, you can find out what programs they now
operate. At IBM, for example, each worker before he starts work, appoint a
mentor to "communication"; and after the employee takes office, he
shall be granted a mentor.
Although in
order to find a mentor, and build a relationship with him now it requires much
more effort than in the time of economic recovery. In quiet times managers are
positive and not so abhorrent idea to take someone to himself "under the
wing". When the economic storm sea should think strategically. First,
think about what goals you are pursuing, taking mentor. What would you like to
achieve? Do you want to learn more about project management? You interested in
studying the human side of the business? You want to help implement the
corporate policy? Make a priority list of their goals.
Knowing
exactly what you want to achieve, go search for colleagues with the knowledge
or experience that you would like to purchase. But be careful in your choice.
Try to learn as a person, whom you see as a mentor, imagine the workflow; Ask
those who are familiar with his work style.
You should
also take into account whether a potential mentor to lead you by the way can
you have chosen.
Remember
that mentoring - a two-way road, especially during an economic downturn. You
will be much easier to work with someone, if you find a man that can understand
the pressure that the head of every day experiences.
Treat him
kindly, and be willing to help. You can tell your boss that you admire his work
and ask him to train you in certain things, for example, in large transactions
or engaging their colleagues in the project. In turn, offer their assistance in
the project, which he directs.
